This HOW TO will walk you through Slack, how to join & use, as well as etiquette in the Slack Channel.

How To Join Slack

  1. Open a new tab

Enter SG Email Address

  1. Enter your Google Apps User Name, i.e. your Startup Grind email address
  2. Click "Create Account" - This will send an email to your address
  3. If you do not have a Startup Grind email, please contact G

Email Notification

An email will be sent to you

Open Welcome Email

  1. Open email, and click the welcome to slack email

Confirm Email

  1. Click on the "Confirm Email"

Welcome To Slack

  1. Fill in Your First Name
  2. Fill in your Last Name (Followed by your city in brackets after your last name)

Create A Password

  1. Create a simple username for yourself (something everyone can easily type to get hold of you)
  2. Create secure password
  3. If you wish to receive communication from Slack, check this
  4. Create Your Account

Security

  1. Click "Never" to ensure your account cannot be easily accessed.

Explore Slack

  2. Or you can "Skip The Tutorial"

Channels

  1. Slackbot is there to kinda help out ;)
  2. Channels, the place you can create, and find channels.

The channels you see are the channels everyone joins, please do not use "@channel" in these channels, you may use "@here".

DM's

  1. Direct messages are where you can find people to send Direct Messages (DM) to.

If you need something super urgent, it's best place to get hold of G, but it really has to be an absolute emergency ;)

Browser Notifications

  1. Enable desktop notifications to receive notifications when people send you messages.

The nice part about slack, is you will only be notified, if you receive a DM, or if someone mentions you in a channel.

Allow

  1. Click "Allow" to allow desktop notifications

Channel Descriptions

  1. #announcements

Announcements are for announcements from HQ (Normally important info), This is the only channel that you may not really chat in, and you have to remain subscribed to

  1. #articles-and-pr

This channel is for ANY articles that you find on the web related to Startup Grind, and wish to share with the world.

@mgasiorek is from HQ, and he is the editor of Startup Grind blog. So every now and then he might ask you to tweet, or retweet something, to get some international eyes on a really cool article. Michael doesn't do it often, and it's really cool when everyone get's involved, and shows how international we are. It's also normally a really well written piece, or by someone super famous ;)

  1. #basecamp-messages

This is for any messages that are sent in the "general discussions" project in Basecamp. You can click on the link to read and reply on basecamp

  1. #random

This channel is for anything non-startup grind, and totally random

  1. #sg-community

This channel is for you to chat to the whole community, and it's about anything Startup Grind related

Direct Messages (DM)

Once you join, feel free to send G a DM (Direct Message) and let him know you are in slack. He will then gladly announce you to the global community ;)

  1. Click the "+" next to Direct Messages in Slack
  2. This screen will appear, and type in "g"
  3. Select G's name
  4. Click "Go"

  1. Click on "Channels" to see a list of channels you can join
  2. Click on "Direct messages" to get a list of directors that you can chat to
  3. Here is G's DM link
  4. This is the message you sent to G ;)

Channels

  1. After clicking "Channels" you will see this screen
  2. Type in a channel name to find a channel, or
  3. Scroll up and down to see all the channels you can join
  4. Loads of great discussions are happening in #Website, so feel free to join it, simply click on the channel to Preview it.

You can then join after previewing it.

Preview A Channel

You are in "Preview" mode

  1. If you want to join the discussions, you may click on "Join Channel"

If you can see the channel, in the channels list, then you are free to join it.

Do Not Disturb Feature

  1. Click on the "Notifications" button to switch "Do Not Disturb" on or off.

Account Settings

  1. Click on the "Team Name" will bring down the team preferences

There are several options and settings that you can change, and most of them are accessible through this menu

Both on this Website version, as well as the version that you download to either your phone, or your computer/latpop/tablet etc.

Bookmark Slack

Don't forget to "Bookmark" slack

  1. Click on the "Star" to start this page.

Tip: Go to a channel that you would like to be sent to immediately before bookmarking the page, then you will be sent to that channel each time you click on the bookmark

Download Slack

  1. A much better way to work with slack, is to download the app for your operating system, and set to auto startup, when you machine starts up.
